How We Got Started

How We Got Started

How We Got Started

On July 1st, 2020, many local residents of the City of Ammon were left feeling abandoned by the city’s Planning and Zoning Commissioners. After two public hearings, the commissioners approved a proposal to annex and rezone a farmhouse and farm land located at the North/East corner of Crowley (45th street) and Sunnyside. The commissioners made their decision based on "little factual information, ignored city's ordinances, the comprehensive plan and public outcries."

Participating in the process helped us realized the average citizen of Ammon had no voice. After researching past meetings and attending current ones, it was clear the Planning and Zoning Commissioners were not going to following rules and had no true consequences.

The hardest part was watching the commissioners show favoritism for developers as several commissioners praised them, while the local residents were criticized.

The meeting with the Council members was even more frustrating. We had tools like city ordinances and the city's comprehensive plan. This plan is guidelines for future development.  First, the city "postponed" the meeting. This allowed them to clean up their mistakes. After getting a lawyer involved, they voted how we wanted, voting against the rezoning.

However, the next month or so, they changed the prottecting ordinances approved the rezoning. We never had a chance.

To quote the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments, "For plans and land use policies to reflect the public’s values and priorities, it’s imperative that citizens become involved in land use decision-making. Through the local planning process, citizens have enormous power to influence the decisions that will affect the local use of land—and, consequently, the price of their homes, the views out their windows, the quality of the air, and the amount of time they spend in traffic. Our mission statement:

As members of the local community with genuine concerns about the surrounding areas of our homes and its future development

We want leadership of the City of Ammon and Bonneville County to not only hear our perspective, but empathize with our problems, and implement key decisions for WISE, planned rural/urban development.

We are not anti-growth; we are enthusiastic supporters of beneficial development with low negative consequences for the community.
